Directions to Mount Alvernia
Directions by car:
Mount Alvernia Retreat Center is located in the village of Wappinger Falls, off of Route 9D. It is approximately 60 miles north of New York City and approximately 10 miles south of Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Major highways nearby include: Interstate 84, the New York Thruway, Route 9, and the Taconic Parkway.
From Connecticut:
- Take interstate I-84 West to Exit 13 for Route 9 North.
- Travel on Route 9 North for approximately 5 miles (McDonalds will be on your left). Stay in the left lane as you will be turning left onto East Main Street which is immediately after passing McDonalds. If you passed the Dairy Queen, you missed the turn.
- Follow East Main Street to the second traffic light.
- East Main Street wanders through Wappingers Falls and changes to Route 9D (making a sharp right turn, stick with it, you’re almost there). At the second light you will see a Sunoco gas station. Turn left at this light onto Delavergne Avenue.
- Travel on Delavergne Avenue approximately ½ mile. The entrance to Mt. Alvernia is on the left at the top of the hill.
From the North/Northeast:
(Directions are from the Mid-Hudson Bridge, Poughkeepsie)
- Take Route 9 south for approximately 6 miles. Just past the entrance to the South Hills Mall, turn right onto Route 9D (you will see Burger King on your left).
- Go to the second traffic light (Sunoco gas station on left).
- Turn right onto Delavergne Avenue.
- Travel on Delavergne Avenue approximately ½ mile. The entrance to Mt. Alvernia is on the left at the top of the hill.
From the South/Southeast:
(Directions are from the intersection of Interstate 84 & Route 9. Route 9 is exit 13 off of Interstate 84).
- Travel on Route 9 North for approximately 5 miles (McDonalds will be on your left). Stay in the left lane as you will be turning left onto East Main Street which is immediately after passing McDonalds. If you passed the Dairy Queen, you missed the turn.
- Follow East Main Street to the second traffic light.

From the West:
- Take the New York State Thruway (I-87) to Exit 17 (Newburgh). Follow signs for I-84 East.
- Take I-84 East to Exit 11. Exit 11 is the first exit after the Newburgh Beacon Bridge toll. You should bear right before the toll booth as you must exit on the right immediately after paying the toll.
- At the top of the exit ramp you will come to a light. Make a left turn at the light onto Route 9D.
- Follow Route 9D for approximately 7.2 miles until you can no longer go straight. At this light you will need to make a left turn (this is the continuation of Route 9D – which is small windy road). Follow this around to the next traffic light (you will see a Sunoco gas station) and turn left at this light onto Delavergne Avenue.
- Travel on Delavergne Avenue for about ½ mile. The entrance to Mt. Alvernia will be on your left at the top of the hill.
Directions by train:
From Grand Central Station, on the Metro-North Hudson Line, the nearest train station is the New Hamburg Station. Call the Metro-North Railroad or check their web site, www.mta.nyc.ny.us/mnr for schedule, fare, and station information. Mt. Alvernia is a five minute taxi ride from the station.
From Albany, New York, on Amtrak, the nearest train station is the Poughkeepsie Station. From Poughkeepsie, take a taxi cab. Call Amtrak or check their web site, www.amtrak.com for schedule, fare, and station information.
Parking at Mt. Alvernia:
For those traveling to Mt. Alvernia by car, please park in the lot behind the Retreat House. Please do not use the lot in the front (this lot is reserved for Chapel parking only).
